Printing directly to a shared network printer [From Windows XP]

Step 2 - Specifying printer type

To find the printer, Windows must be told if the printer is a local printer (e.g. attached to this computer) or a network printer. Although the printer in this case is not connected directly to this computer, we need to tell Windows that is is a local printer as we want to print directly to it, not via another computer on the network.

Instructions:

In the "Add Printer Wizard" "Local or Network Printer" window, select "Local printer attached to this computer" and deselect "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer". Click the "Next" button in the bottom right corner of the window.
